The Editor
![]()
When AoW is starting up, you will want to click on the EDITOR to be able to create your VERY OWN SCENARIOS. This is best for people with a vast imagination and alot of patience. This is an explanation on how to use the Editor.
You
will start out in a screen such as this when you select a NEW scenario to make.
You must name your scenario, music tunes that will be played on the scenario
when actually tested/used.
This is the most important
screen in DESIGNING, for this is where you place objects, terrain, heroes,
units, events etc...
Using the largest
"BRUSH" I am able to place dark grass terrain upon the water scenario
that you start out with. Unfortunately there is no actual scenario that you can
just start out from having it all as land, you are always forced to brush it all
yourself... which can be tiring and annoying, but after that then you can begin
making a scenario.

As you can see, I have now brushed even more land into the scenario, soon it will be half done with the terrain.
The land will be surrounded
by water, so now it is time to place objects onto the land! Ready??
You will first need to place
down the "leaders" of both opposing sides, so you will click onto the
Player 1 Humans slot which will be you.
Your leader is now officially
on the scenario map! He is in the top left corner, as the enemy leader will be
in the bottom right corner to avoid an early skirmirsh.
As you can see the two dots
are on the land. The blue dot is your leader on the top, and the enemy leader is
on the bottom right corner. That seems good and it looks nice so far... but both
sides need things to support themselves. Let us go into the UNITS TILE.
Understand? You must click
on the "UNITS" text to be able to access the units. As you can see, it
features all the possible units of being produced at towns, and even those who
cannot be produced at a town. But right now, click on the 2nd Unit on the list,
the TITAN
click on him. HOWEVER, we must
make sure we are placing him in the map on the CORRECT SIDE TO BE ON. Many
editor users make some mistakes of making many units on the map independents,
let us go onto the main bar.

It is on Independents, therefore that would make the Titan an independent, we want him to be on our side, so click on PLAYER 1 (HUMANS) which is your side.
After that, go back into the UNITS section and place down a Titan next to your leader.
Did you do it right? It
should look like this, the Titan next to your leader, under his/her command. If
you did not do it correctly, go back into the players section on the top bar and
click on PLAYER 1 (HUMANS), but if you did it right, then let us continue. Do
not worry, it takes a little time even to learn the basics!
The map should now look like
this, or somewhat like it in your scenario if you have followed the tips like
this. There are now two blue dots, which means you now have two units. Now...
click on the TILES section NEXT TO THE UNITS SECTION.
Tiles are some of the most
important things in your scenario. They produce nice sight seeing, important
things to access, finding other units or treasures, sources of resouces you will
need, much more terrain and also access to underground caverns that will be
explained later on.
For now however, your leader will need a town to produce units
in and gain supplies at. Click on one of the town icons, which are these
Now, click on the one most to the left, or the choice is yours. I would
recommend just getting started to pick the smallest town. After you have clicked
on your town, click it right next to your leader!
You have now created a town
that is under your rule nearby your leader! But it will appear as a random town,
which is how the Age of Wonders editor works. Right click the town, and click
EDIT.
This is what you will see
when you click the edit screen. You will be able to name your town, what player
it belongs to which will be you, what race you want it to be which should be the
race of your leader. And in that case, it is humans. You can set what type of
strength wall you have, such as none, wooden or stone. Defenders is an attribute
designed to what forces you have nearby in the town. Upgrade Level is special,
this is where all the produced units can be. However, due to this being the
smallest town, we cannot produce any other higher characters.
The town is now a human
town! This should be set for your enemies as well. Do exactly the same for your
Azrac rival, and now click on the player list "Player 2 (AZRACS)"
After you do all this your enemy section should look like this.
Now both forces are
officially prepared to produce units and has a guard! See, it is easy to make a
scenario when you know how to do it! But now, since the important work has been
done, here is where the real fun comes in. Now we will add objects to the
scenario. Let's go back into the TILES section.
You will now want to place certain objects <by your
choice> and under the rule of person you will want them to have. I would
recommend putting all objects under Independent's rule, to make it more
adventurous and exciting when you discover a new area in the map. Also realize
that not all OBJECTS on the map when you go to it will fall to your rule, such
as the Wizard's Tower
, a Spring of Life
,
and an Arena.
There are also other objects
that will not fall to your rule when you get to them, for you can only use their
services or be able to gain certain things from them, depending on the
structure.
On Tiles, you can add
terrain scenes, forests, trees, and other objects to your scenario to make them
look more interesting. Let us try to place the largest snow mountain on our
scenario.
We have placed a huge snowy
mountain on our land, nearby the Humans.
The scanner identifies where
we have placed the mountain on the map. As you can tell, these tiles make the
area much less BLAND. Now let us make more tiles. Add more snow onto the humans
area, I will demonstrate more.
Now much more snowy
mountians have been placed near the humans. Look at the scanner.
Understand how it works? Let
us now get the SNOW BRUSH and place snow all over the Humans land.
Now the Humans officially
live in the cold north! :)
The scanner will show now
that the Humans land is covered with snow! Let us now go south to investigate
the Azracs land.
The Azracs land is in need of a desert tile, so let us do what we did with the Humans, only with the DESERT tiles...

We have now made the both enemies have opposite tiles, which means alot in the battlefield too, pending the terrain! I have explained most of the editor now... but the rest is up to you. This is where IMAGINATION comes in.
Do not worry, I am sure you will create great scenarios too. Just come back here and study the text more if you need help. Remember... after you need the skills of the editor, you need the most important skill that is really more of a natural based attribute. Imagination.
