Sega Genesis

The Sega Genesis-Games: 10- Durability: 7- Fame: 8- Style: 8- Accessories: 8- Grade: A-

The Sega Genesis... my god, what a console for entertainment. As you may have noticed, the console DOES have an entire grade higher than the NES. Better games *BELIEVE IT OR NOT* and WAY BETTER DURABILITY *BELIEVE IT!* than the NES... The Sega Genesis is a very credible system that has a fine amount of games that can definitely entertain for hours. Perhaps not as MANY games as the NES, each game does have it's significant reason for making the GAMES rating be a 10. Games such as Rings of Power *BEST GAME OF ALL TIME*, the PHANTASY STAR SERIES, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG'S BIRTHPLACE, and so on... is quite known, which is what makes it's fame very high. The Durability is very good, it can get crashed, not blowing the cartridges and it will still work, unlike the NES. Style is very very NEAT, the wires were never too complex to hook up, and the system itself is easy to clean. Now ACCESSORIES... I feel *Other than the Gamecube controller* that Sega Genesis has perhaps the best or one of the best controllers for gameplay. You can hold it easily, feels smooth but not smooth enough to slide out of your hands. Start button is in a good place and the joypad seems agile enough for each game... though I dispise 6 button joypads, the SEGA GENESIS 3 BUTTON JOYPAD is great. Sega Genesis... perhaps the best console ever.

And now... presenting, the reviews of SEGA GENESIS GAMES!

Ballz- Fun: 8- Gameplay: 6- Graphics: 3- Value: 3- Sound: 7 Grade: B-

"Ballz"... a unique name, along with being a unique game. You can play one of the eight characters in one player mode, or two player mode! The storyline is pretty simple, you must defeat all the other "Ballz" contestants in the fighting arena of "Ballz" and then defeat the Jester to get your "little wish". The game may look weird, but it is quite a good fighting game!

Beyond Oasis- Fun: 8- Gameplay: 8- Graphics: 7- Value: 7- Sound: 7 Grade: A-

Beyond Oasis is a great game really. The A- says it all, it contains a variety of attributes and is basically worth playing. You play as Prince Ali who has found the Golden Armlet and must find the other Silver before evil plunges the world into darkness. It's one of the few ACTION RPGS of Sega Genesis, and one of the best.

Cadash- Fun: 10- Gameplay: 9- Graphics: 6- Value: 5- Sound: 6 Grade: B

Cadash is actually GREAT with gameplay and FUN. You can be either the Fighter or Mage and gain levels like a usual rpg, actually Cadash is the most RPG oriented action rpg combination I've ever seen in a Sega Genesis game. Point being, Cadash has a brutal flaw, not only is it INCREDIBLY short of a game in storyline but you cannot even save the game.

Captain America + The Avengers- Fun: 8- Gameplay: 7- Graphics: 9- Value: 4- Sound: 3 Grade: B-

"THE AVENGERS"... that great booming voice that blasts that quote when you enter the game, you can play with a friend, do training mode or do 1 player with one of the Avengers which are Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, and VISION. I felt Captain America had a very special quality, GRAPHIC value. After all, I don't vote graphics by their bit colors, but by their linings and how they look.

Dungeons and Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun- Fun: 8- Gameplay: 10- Graphics: 8- Value: 10- Sound: 7 Grade: A

Oh ho, Dungeons and Dragons... do not let the D&D fool you, this is a GREAT game. The dice system actually works well in this game, I've never been a fan of D&D but here it makes a remarkable alchemy through Gameplay and Fun that gives it an A grade.

Exile- Fun: 9- Gameplay: 6- Graphics: 6- Value: 7- Sound: 6 Grade: C+

Another action RPG like Cadash, and though you have a bit more options with it to choose from than with Cadash... it just isn't as good in FUN and gameplay THRILL, but Exile is still worth a try.

Eternal Champions- Fun: 8- Gameplay: 7- Graphics: 8- Value: 10- Sound: 8 Grade: A-

There's just something about Eternal Champions that is entrancing... other than it's great music and sound quality it does have some good gameplay, not as good as Street Fighter II in fighting but it's very as I said, entrancing. The character biographies and stories added a lot of DRAMA to love each character for who they are and what they were, so the game earned a nice A-.

Gain Ground- Fun: 9- Gameplay: 6- Graphics: 6- Value: 9- Sound: 5 Grade: B

Gain Ground is filled with fun, the gameplay is a bit ... generic, and the sound isn't to die for. What makes Gain Ground so thrilling is... that it is just that, thrilling. It is so easy to LOSE, the DIFFICULTY is what makes Gain Ground get a B, very nice difficulty system.

Gemfire- Fun: 10- Gameplay: 9- Graphics: 8- Value: 10- Sound: 6 Grade: A

Gemfire... one of the best games I have ever laid my hands on to play. Perhaps not as VAST as Koei's ROMANCE OF THE THREE KINGDOMS, I have always said that Gemfire is one of the "Ultimate Basic Strategy Games" that makes it one of the most enjoyable experiences for a game I have ever seen.

Golden Axe- Fun: 8- Gameplay: 6- Graphics: 7- Value: 9- Sound: 7 Grade: B-

Golden Axe... we all know it from the arcade version, but how does it bode on the Sega Genesis? The gameplay at times is a bit "SLUNK" in my opinion, sometimes it is a bit slow and not very fluid at all, despite that... it is still quite enjoyable.

Golden Axe II- Fun: 7- Gameplay: 8- Graphics: 9- Value: 7- Sound: 8 Grade: B

Golden Axe II is one of the BEST examples I have ever seen for a sequel fixing something that ruined it's beginner game. Golden Axe II makes the game much more fluid in your attacking, slashing and hacking, even improves sound! However it is not as fun due to harder enemies in my opinion, still worth your time though.

Golden Axe III- Fun: 8- Gameplay: 9- Graphics: 9- Value: 8- Sound: 9 Grade: A-

A lot of people may think I am overrating Golden Axe III, feel free to think that, but... Golden Axe III added two more characters even though they got rid of Gilius, the sound and graphics are much better, the fun value grew from Golden Axe II, the difficulty and value is very solid. Golden Axe III is a great multiplayer experience with the new VERSUS MODE ALSO, I also enjoy the magic system being condensed and a bit more equal with each character!

The Immortal- Fun: 5- Gameplay: 8- Graphics: 8- Value: 7- Sound: 7 Grade: B-

The Immortal is one heck of a spooky game, however it has a difficulty level that makes it a bit... too tough to disifer at times, let alone play. Despite that, The Immortal has good gameplay and graphics, so it has earned itself a B-.

King's Bounty- Fun: 6- Gameplay: 7- Graphics: 6- Value: 5- Sound: 3 Grade: C-

Don't get me wrong, King's Bounty is great in a strategic point of view of leading an army, but you can barely get any armies in time along with the terrible DAY LIMIT you have to beat all the villains. Despite this, it's still not a bad game...

Landstalker- Fun: 9- Gameplay: 8- Graphics: 7- Value: 8- Sound: 6 Grade: B

Landstalker is filled with adventure, as well as FUN. This game also has a huge amount of PUZZLES, this should be known as a "PUZZLE ACTION RPG", there are also some tough monsters if you do not have the right equipment on Nigel.

Light Crusader- Fun: 9- Gameplay: 9- Graphics: 8- Value: 7- Sound: 7 Grade: B+

Light Crusader is a bit more high up than Light Crusader in the action rpg GAMEPLAY department, not to mention with more options. The sound is also quite better, take part in a magnificent quest as the Swordsman David who must save the disappearing people of Green Row against evil sorcerery.

Might and Magic- Fun: 6- Gameplay: 7- Graphics: 4- Value: 2- Sound: 1 Grade: C-

Might and Magic... it may seem nice at first, and the gameplay is good regards to having all your characters all made up from genders/species and have a huge group... only trouble is, the game is a bit hard to manage with and play, much tougher than Bard's Tale, still not a bad game though.

Phantasy Star- Fun: 7- Gameplay: 7- Graphics: 7- Value: 8- Sound: 5 Grade: B

The beginning of one of the best gaming series in the history of the gaming industry, Phantasy Star. Play as Alis Landle, you must travel through the planets to stop the evil Lassic who has killed her only brother, you will gain three companions on your way... the rpg system may seem a bit basic like and not advanced at all but we like it that way. However I have always found PS at times to be a bit difficult and run out of fun value quickly...

Phantasy Star II- Fun: 8- Gameplay: 8- Graphics: 8- Value: 8- Sound: 7 Grade: A-

The sequel of Phantasy Star, and quite better with two grade points higher than PS. Phantasy Star II puts you in control of Rolf the Agent, who must investigate the malfunctions of Mother Brain, leader of the world and find the "Recorder" that has much information in regards to all the monster mutations and huge amounts of data that would be greatly useful to humankind's existence! Now... Phantasy Star II makes up for the fun lack in the first Phantasy Star with so many characters to have and so many monsters to engage with a great level up system!

Phantasy Star III- Fun: 10- Gameplay: 10- Graphics: 5- Value: 10- Sound: 6 Grade: A

Phantasy Star III... third best game of all time... PS III is the "Black sheep" of the PS series, but it is also the best of the four. Phantasy Star III not only brings up a more medieval settings with Princes, Princesses, marriages, but then it involves the usual cyborgs and such that plunge you into great depth of a story. I have always felt due to the very nice level up system and solid gameplay that the fun is quite unstoppable unless you level up to 99 in the end like in Phantasy Star IV! Sound and Graphics are nothing to die for in PS3, but to me, those are the least important attributes of a game.

Phantasy Star IV- Fun: 9- Gameplay: 9- Graphics: 9- Value: 9- Sound: 8 Grade: A

Perhaps the most popular game on the Sega Genesis, but definitely the most popular RPG on the console for SURE. In 1994 when Phantasy Star IV came out, I feel it changed rpgs. It showed what many rpgs can do, and inspire to become. Take part of an undying adventure with Alys Braigwin and her partner Chaz Ashley as they dive into a mystery that plagues their world Motavia, that unravels to be possibly the entire destruction of the Algo System! PS IV... is overall as you can see in attributes very well balanced, for it earns an A!

Pirates! Gold- Fun: 10- Gameplay: 8- Graphics: 8- Value: 7- Sound: 6 Grade: A-

Notice the FUN SCORE? 10? Just like Phantasy Star III it packs an entrancing gameplay that you just want to keep exploring through it, play it to it's fullest extent... take control of a Captain who can lead great campaigns or be a beginner pirate on the Spanish Main in the 1600s, English, Dutch, Spanish and the French are hard at war, and ruthless pirates horde all over the seas... can you become the best pirate of all time and complete all 10 pirate quests?

Rings of Power- Fun: 10- Gameplay: 10- Graphics: 10- Value: 10- Sound: 10 Grade: A+

Rings of Power... the top rated game of all time on my lists AND the best game of all time. Rings of Power is an INSPIRATION to what many game designers of old could truly cherish. Take part in one of the greatest adventures known to the Sega Genesis system, you are Buc, a young Sorcerer in the apprenticeship of Master Thalmus. The Rings of Power... once being a legend, a possible myth... the rumors of their actual existance is sparking everyone in the world's interest, including the evil demon lord VOID, who was the one who stole the precious Rod of Creation from Nexus 500 years ago, as they fought a titanic battle which broke parts of our world. Apparently the Rod was divided into the eleven "Rings of Power", and your quest will begin as you march through the world of Ushka Bay and try to find the hints and secrets that may perhaps recombine the greatest item in history, the "Rod of Creation". As you can see, Rings of Power is rated in each attribute 10, due to everything being JUST RIGHT. This game is HIGHLY ADVISED to play, as it is simply the best, so many things to do, leveling... talking with NPCs, at times it almost seems like you are there... ...Rings of Power, the greatest game of all time.

Road Rash- Fun: 8- Gameplay: 6- Graphics: 8- Value: 9- Sound: 6 Grade: B-

Road Rash's strongest quality is it's value, I believe it is still talked about among old school gamers as being one of the most fun and most KNOWN racing games throughout the whole system. To me, I know it is one of the best racing games I have ever actually played! Motorcycle games require a lot of work, along with a good interface/gameplay and at times even sound counts. Road Rash did a very good job at this, getting a B-.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms- Fun: 6- Gameplay: 10- Graphics: 8- Value: 10- Sound: 7 Grade: A-

I've said many times that Gemfire is the best strategy on the Sega Genesis, and I'm referring to the best BASIC MODE strategy. However, Romance of the Three Kingdoms is DEFINITELY the best strategy/empire builder with all its VAST options that are available to you... the fun value is slightly brought down due to the SO MANY things you have to handle and manage at times BUT..... regarding Gameplay and Value it's quality is that of Rings of Power's.

Shadowrun- Fun: 10- Gameplay: 8- Graphics: 6- Value: 9- Sound: 3 Grade: A-

Shadowrun... once you play this game you can either get entranced or be thrown away by it. Incredibly FUN, Shadowrun packs a great character building system with KARMA and doing jobs for local "Mr. Johnsons" so you can "Shadowrun" to get what you need. You play Joshua, a 24 year old male who must find out who killed his brother! The plot thickens as you play on... sound is nothing to die for, graphics are not great... yet as I've said before, that is not what makes a game! Looks like Shadowrun earns the A- mark!

Shining in the Darkness- Fun: 7- Gameplay: 7- Graphics: 5- Value: 7- Sound: 7 Grade: B-

Something about it reminds you of Shining Force? I believe it was made from parts of the same plot as Shining Force the first, and a lot of the magic seems the same. This game actually has a huge amount of puzzles and is downright difficult if you do not level your team up high. Other than that, it earns a B-...

Shining Force- Fun: 8- Gameplay: 8- Graphics: 8- Value: 8- Sound: 8 Grade: B+

One of the legendary Sega Genesis games, SHINING FORCE the first! Earning an B+, Shining Force packs a long story with 7+ Chapters of adventure and leveling up, which is no doubt worth playing! You are Max the Swordsman, who must save the world from the evil forces of Runefaust before Darksol unseals the legendary beast DARK DRAGON! You must also gather numerous comrades and organize them into a group known as... THE SHINING FORCE!

Shining Force II- Fun: 10- Gameplay: 7- Graphics: 9- Value: 8- Sound: 10 Grade: A

SHINING FORCE II! Shining Force II adds a huge improvement from Shining Force. You can travel all over the lands, killing enemies and leveling up high. The level up system is commendable, as Shining Force II goes down in history as being one of Sega Genesis's most elite games.

Sorcerer's Kingdom- Fun: 7- Gameplay: 7- Graphics: 6- Value: 5- Sound: 5 Grade: C

Sorcerer's Kingdom... is not a bad game but... it gets tedious after a bit. Not only is the difficulty way too hard, ... well that's actually about the problem, lol. However if you manage to actually GRASP the gameplay you will be able to have some fun with this game!

Streets of Rage- Fun: 7- Gameplay: 6- Graphics: 8- Value: 8- Sound: 7 Grade: C+

"This city was once a happy, peaceful place... until one day a powerful secret criminal organization took over. This vicious syndicate soon had control of the government, and even the police force. The city has become a center of violence and crime everywhere, where no one is safe. Amid this turmoil, a group of determined young police officers has sworn to clean up the streets of the city. Along them are Adam Hunter, Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding. They are willing to risk everything... even their lives on the Streets of Rage". Streets of Rage may be the weakest of the series in Fun/Gameplay and Graphics, but... you got to love the story/plot, it is quite an enhancement to attempt to try the game. A lot of games have some weird plots that start off the game, this one is more rebellious and world moving.

Streets of Rage II- Fun: 7- Gameplay: 7- Graphics: 8- Value: 6- Sound: 7 Grade: C+

"One year after the battle... the city that had been plagued with crime and violence was safe and peaceful. However, evil has once again cast it's shadow over the city. Mr. X, the syndicate boss believed destroyed by the three young vigilanties, has come back to life stronger than ever. Thirsty for revenge, he kidnaps Adam in an attempt to lure Axel and Blaze into a trap! Axel and Blaze set out to help their faithful companion joined by Axel's friend Max, a Wrestler, and Adam's kid brother Skate. They're determined to save Adam and put Mr. X out of action! Four young friends, with rage burning inside them, make a stand for friendship and peace..." Now... the plot is considered more lame than the first, but the character have gotten better and so has the gameplay. The graphics in my opinion still seem the same however. The fun has also risen, but the value itself has dropped, making this game earn a C+!

Streets of Rage III- Fun: 9- Gameplay: 8- Graphics: 9- Value: 8- Sound: 8 Grade: A-

"Axel, I have learned from a friend, Dr. Zan, that the syndicate is back with a clever new plan to take control of the city by replacing top ranking officials with with identical robots under the control of Mr. X. Our old boss, the

chief of police, has disappeared and everybody is involved with the recent spate of bomb explosions. I fear that the syndicate's evil plot  is already underway. Adam is too busy to help, but his brother Skate has joined Dr. Zan and me to get behind the bombing campaign and expose the real danger to the city. We need your help, Axel, please come. -Your partner, Blaze"  Now... Streets of Rage III may have been anticipated as a bit of a better upgrade to Streets of Rage II, but... I really do not believe we expected such a thrill when we popped this into our consoles! Streets of Rage III, another dippy storyline plot with the syndicate BUT... the gameplay/graphics and fun value has risen very nicely, being one of the best fighting games on the console in my opinion. It's value has also gone up, even the SOUND has gone up, making it the best of the Streets of Rage series, along with a new character Dr. Zan! New techniques for your characters to use... a RUNNING feature, much more fluid fighting even with the slowest character in the game... the game CLEARLY "EARNS" a nice A-!

Street Fighter II- Fun: 10- Gameplay: 8- Graphics: 9- Value: 9- Sound: 7 Grade: A-

Considered a classic, yet still one of the widely most played games today even in the Arcades... STREET FIGHTER II! Play as one of the twelve original characters and defeat all who oppose you. Street Fighter II is not widely loved for it's single player mode fun, but... IT'S MULTIPLAYER FUN. You can spend so much time fighting your friends, getting better with the game... Street Fighter II gets an A-!

Sword of Vermillion- Fun: 7- Gameplay: 7- Graphics: 5- Value: 7- Sound: 5 Grade: C

Known as David, you must recover the many Rings known as ancient relics and fight against the evil King Tsaork, who destroyed your homeland kingdom Excalibar, and slayed your father 18 years ago. Your typical rpg, with an action quality that at times is a bit difficult to hold, and PUMMELING puzzles. Gets a C.

Theme Park- Fun: 9- Gameplay: 8- Graphics: 3- Value: 7- Sound: 1 Grade: B

Doesn't that beginning Theme Park tune want you to build a huge park, then rip out the cartridge and throw it out the window after it keeps playing for 30 minutes straight? Well DON'T! Because Theme Park is a great game, and it gets extra value points due to it being such a great simulator/builder on the Sega Genesis. Only problem is you need to keep purchasing new parks, otherwise the prices just keep getting so insane -_- but there is a password system so you can record your MONEY and name, BUT NOT YOUR PARK! The Fun and Gameplay ratings are high, but the Graphics/Sound are very low, earning a B!

Traysia- Fun: 5- Gameplay: 5- Graphics: 4- Value: 3- Sound: 4 Grade: D+

Traysia makes a few attempts at anime, which is nice but... still nothing beats Phantasy Star IV's vast graphic anime value. Anyway... the beginning of Traysia starts you off as Roy, a young man who is leaving his village... his love, to explore the world due to his incredible adventurous spirit. Such a sad beginning of a romance lost, turns out to uncover a plot of evil that Roy and new companions must solve! Well I tried to make it look as possible, but... Traysia is not a fun game, and the gameplay is really annoying, ESPECIALLY IN BATTLES, do not even ask if it is fluid like... because it's not. Low value, low graphics and sound also, earning a dismal D+...

Uncharted Waters II- Fun: 7- Gameplay: 10- Graphics: 8- Value: 9- Sound: 5 Grade: A-

A RARE treat if you can ever play it, for it is BURIED in the Sega Genesis underrated games, let alone ever played? Uncharted Waters II is a strategy game, also a pirate/ship game... and it does just that, as figured made by KOEI who also made the incredible ROMANCE OF THE THREE KINGDOMS, made a great ship game. But what is it's quality? GAMEPLAY! The fun value lacks slightly because it is so vast and at times, tough, for you have MUCH to do during the game... depending on your character's storyline, all characters have ranged difficulty levels. However, mostly you must build a fleet of ships to beat pirates, trade in foreign lands, travel the seas and more... anything you want to do... and it makes up for the age loss in Pirates! Gold by a mile! Not as fun as Pirates!, but close enough in strategy, earning a A-!

Warrior of Rome- Fun: 6- Gameplay: 7- Graphics: 6- Value: 6- Sound: 6 Grade: C

Warrior of Rome is one of those army/logic building types of games... if you're bored... and I mean really bored, you should try this game. The music is nice and some of the battles are spooky because you can only WATCH them fight!! Despite this, the game gets a C.

Warsong- Fun: 9- Gameplay: 8- Graphics: 7- Value: 7- Sound: 7 Grade: B+

Warsong has a very good war/fighting value, and the graphics/sound are well put also. The fun is pretty high also due to the non stop action, and all the possible troops you can have with your leaders! Warsong gets a nice B+!

Ys III- Fun: 7- Gameplay: 7- Graphics: 6- Value: 6- Sound: 6 Grade: B-

ACTION PACKED along with an impressive story, good sound as well! Ys III is one of the few action rpgs on the console that were pretty good. The Fun and Gameplay suffers slightly however due to the game's powerful difficulty because if you make one wrong move, you can just be slaughtered by a mere monster... so it earns a B-.

Valis- Fun: 8- Gameplay: 6- Graphics: 6- Value: 7- Sound: 7 Grade: B

Another game that makes it's attempt on anime... and does way better than Traysia! Other than it's average anime, you play Yuko, a Japanese school girl who witnesses monsters coming into the city of Tokyo... and suddenly is thrown into a huge adventure and ends up being the one who must slay the core of all evil with the Sword of Valis!

Valis III- Fun: 8- Gameplay: 7- Graphics: 6- Value: 7- Sound: 7 Grade: B

The gameplay has improved since Valis the first game, along with the storyline but it appears the game still has many of the same qualities as the past! Yuko must once again save the Human World from the evil King of the Dark World, who is planning to place his whole legion into earth! GO YUKO!!
